Southwest Airlines Cabin Baggage Allowance
Southwest Airlines allows each passenger one carry-on bag and a personal item to be stowed in the cabin. No charge is incurred; the carry-on bag not more than 24 x 16 x 10 inches (61 x 41 x 25 cm). Other personal effects such as handbags, briefcases, cameras, food tins, or notebooks must be stowed in an approved stowage under a seat in front and should not exceed 18.5 x 13.5 x 8.5 inches or 47 x 34 x 22 cm in size.
Southwest Airlines Checked Baggage Allowance
Southwest Airlines is unique because free checked bags are available with each ticketed passenger. A maximum of 50 pounds or 23 kilograms is the weight, and the sum of length + width + height should not exceed 62 inches or 157 cm. Additional and oversized bags may be paid for to check. Bags between 51 and 100 pounds or more than 62 inches but less than 80 inches in total dimensions have overweight/oversized charges.

Sporting Goods and Musical Instruments
Passengers are allowed two checked bags free of charge, with each bag weighing up to 50 pounds and measuring no more than 62 inches in total dimensions (length + width + height). Each passenger is also allowed one carry-on bag (maximum dimensions of 24 x 16 x 10 inches) and one personal item (maximum dimensions of 16.25 x 13.5 x 8 inches) free of charge.
Sports Equipment
The following types of sports equipment are allowed to be checked in as part of the regular baggage allowance in Southwest Airlines:
- Golf Bags: If within weight and size limits, golf bags are counted as one checked bag.
- Skis and Snowboards: One pair of skis or one snowboard, poles, and boots may all fit in one bag without extra charges.
- Surfboards: Surfboards can be checked on flights within Hawaii as one of the two free bags; otherwise, they incur a fee of $75.
- Bicycles: Allowed as checked luggage but must be packed in a bike box or bag. There will be a charge if they are oversized.
Overweight Fee Equipment
Additional fees apply in cases where your sports equipment exceeds the standard sizes and weight.
- Overweight Fees: 51-70 pounds, the luggage will be charged between $100-$125. In case the cases are over 71 pounds, they will be charged at $125 per bag.
- Oversized Fees: From 63 to 80 inches, the bag will attract a charge of $125 per bag.
Musical Instruments
SouthWest Airlines allows musical instruments to be checked and also carried on. Instruments qualifying within the size requirements for carry-on can fit in the overhead storage bins when available. Larger instruments may be checked as a bag, or, depending on size, there is the ability to purchase an additional seat if the instrument is larger than a carry-on size but less than 100 pounds or 45 kilograms. Instruments checked as baggage will count towards your free checked baggage allowance.
